Washington, D.C.
- U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, released the following statement commemorating the signing earlier today of the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 (S. 2739) into law:

"With the stroke of a pen, the largest collection of measures dealing with a spectrum of National park, public lands, water, and territorial issues to emerge from the Congress since 1996 has become law.  As Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, I am proud to note that this Congress has demonstrated a renewed commitment to conserving America's precious natural resources and unique cultural heritage for generations to come.  There are many individual initiatives of significance contained in this bill; but collectively these measures will provide essential new protections for wilderness, National Parks, precious water resources, historic sites, and citizens from sea to shining sea."

Fifty-seven of the bills included in the Act - nearly evenly split between bills sponsored by Democrats and Republicans - originated in the House Natural Resources Committee, where Rahall worked closely with Subcommittee Chairmen Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), and Donna Christensen (D-VI) to shepherd these measures through the House.
